Miro Cellars Petite Sirah label

Vineyard:
Colloquially known as Rockpile since the 1850s, the northwestern corner of Dry Creek Valley where the grapes in this wine were grown received its AVA status fewer than ten years ago. The allure of this appellation is virgin soils, relatively dry soil condition and plenty of sunny, fog-free days and nights. This vineyard is located at the most northern end of the appellation and is only a three-acre parcel. The soils are typical for the region: red, mixed with decomposed granite and other rocks, relatively of poor nutritional values, therefore producing low yields of highly concentrated fruit.
Winemaking:
One of the joys of making wine for semi-Garagiste Miro Cellars is seeking out extremely high-quality wine grapes from small vineyards. This very small lot of Rockpile Petite Sirah is a perfect example. Being less than one ton, the grapes were fermented in small half ton bins and punched down by hand until dry. What I love about Petite is the ease of fermentation and responsiveness of the grapes. The composition was nearly ideal and no “adjustments” were needed. After fermentation and pressing, the wine was aged in two new French oak barrels for 22 months. Just before bottling, the wine was lightly fined and filtered.
Winemaker’s Tasting Notes:
This is a special wine showing Petite Sirah at its best—inky dark, with complex and concentrated flavors of blueberry, blackberry, black licorice and molasses. The mouthfeel is dense and juicy with a long, chocolate finish.

Winemaking:
The 2008 vintage was a rollercoaster ride. Late winter and spring were unusually dry, then a killer frost struck in April, forcing many growers to use their already scarce water supplies for a protective spray of water on the vines. Some of the old growers said it was the worst frost they’d seen since 1972. Summer itself was typically moderate and warm, and harvest got off to an early start in August, with many varieties ripening at the same time. We were lucky and did not get any damage from the frost earlier in the year and our grapes did not get damaged from the heat back in May. The grapes were harvested on October 9th, 2008 from a single vineyard in Dry Creek Valley for the total of about 3 tons with 25 degrees Brix sugar. After cold soak the wine was fermented in an open top fermentor for the total of ten days. After pressing the wine was racked to barrels and aged for 21 months in 36% new European oak barrels.
Winemaker’s Tasting Notes:
The grape yields in the 2008 vintage were relatively lower than normal, thus producing wines with more depth, extraction and flavors. This Petite is a great example of the varietal’s potential: abundant avors and aromas of blackberries, blueberries, plums and white pepper. On the mouth: substantial tannins with a long juicy finish deliver dark and delicious wine destined to age well.

THE CONCEPT: I made my first Petite Sirah 19 years ago and I’m still in love with the grape. Petite is truly an American variety—powerful, bold and unrestrained in its capability, and yet it needs a gentle winemaking approach to unveil its true identity. Order this wine online.

Miro Cellars 2008 Old Vines Zinfandel

Winemaker's Notes: Finding and producing the ultimate Zinfandel has been my passion for almost two decades. This Zin, produced from an old-vine, head-pruned vineyard just yards from the bank of the Russian River, has come the closest to fulfilling this passion. Loaded with juicy delicious fruit and just a kiss of toasty oak and vanilla nuances, the wine is irresistible. Drink now through 2012. 190 cases made

2009 Miro Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon

Winemaker's Notes: This relatively young vineyard is planted nearly at the top of Pine Mountain at 2200 feet elevation above the valley of the Russian River. The moderate temperature inversion at that altitude supports softer, richer tannins in the wine, concentrated wild berry aromas and enhanced varietal specific flavors of dark fruit, slight earthiness and subtle spices. 190 css made.

THE CONCEPT: To create a Cab that is elegant and enjoyable with food and also age worthy.
